Some things I have observed watching people in Wal Mart and, unfortunately, watching friends locally as well. When it comes to preparing for a disaster such as Hurricane Irma. People are doing it wrong.
With Irma’s impact to our area not expected until tomorrow (2017-09-11), and information regarding this storm flooding our news for the last 7 days (at least), the time to prepare for the impact is not NOW. It was last year.
You should have already had a plan in place. You should have already had a supply of non-perishable foods, or slow perishable foods (cans) in stock in your home. You should have already had batteries (cycling them through as needed). You should have already had a weather radio. You should have already had an alternate power source for your refrigerator. You should have already had an evacuation plan.
Watching people scrambling to get stuff ready NOW is downright entertaining.
All of this stuff should be “ongoing”. It should be a part of your normal, every day routine.
Don’t be “that guy” buying all the stuff and having no plan on how to survive in a worst case scenario.
Several years ago during the ice storm we lost power for a couple days. Tracie and I had hot meals every day, plenty of clean drinking water, and were warm and snuggly in our home. The only thing we didn’t do was have light switches that worked. But we had lights none the less.
People infuriate me.
