A couple of years ago, a former co-worker and friend (Police Officer) made a statement to me that changed my outlook on firearms as tools. At the time I was building some badassery on the AR platform and had tuned a rifle down to about a 400 meter gun. I was proud of it.
His statement, in the form of a question was, “At what point, does the use of your firearm transition from a defensive stance to an offensive stance?”
Now let me clarify. I am not a hunter. I will hunt if I need to feed my family, I am capable of hunting, I just choose to not do that as a matter of recreation or entertainment. I have absolutely nothing against it and actually support it from a conservation point of view. I encourage people to hunt game if that is what they enjoy.
That being said my application for a firearm is not for that. It’s for sport shooting, targets, and self defense.
So the question made me stop and think.
Very shortly after that I sold all of my AR platforms. And began to think logically about my firearms. What they are designed to do, how I would employ them and how I could make them easier to deploy if needed.
I looked at the ammunition I had on hand. The different calibers. How I would have to carry so many different calibers to cover the spectrum of weapons I had to carry.
.223, .38, .380, 9mm, .22LR, 12GA… and so on.
I sold everything that wasn’t 9MM. I purchased a 9MM carbine.
Because I envision my shooting to be mostly within about 25-50 yards in a target shooting scenario and even less in a self defense scenario. I can carry one caliber and feed several firearms. One box of ammo and several delivery options.
So I will ask you… do you know when defensive use becomes an offensive use? I assure you it will vary with your mindset, the situation presented and the general world around you. I chose my set up based on what I think I am most likely to find myself facing. That’s the best you can do.
Please note: If you employ your firearms in what you perceive to be a self defense scenario, your use and the outcome of it will be judged and scrutinized by people who can not or will not be able to put themselves into your mindset. Offensive use of firearms by anyone other than the military or in select circumstances the police is not legal in any state. Period.
